Lunch and Dinner

Well the lunch today looked so good I just had to take a picture. I was in charge of the french fries and because I started early and didn't rush things they turned out great. A little basil, salt and pepper backed in the oven at 450 for 35 minutes and then broiled for about two. I also nuked them for 3 1/2 minutes in a bowl in the microwave before starting and rinsed off the starch before and after the microwave. The grilled cheese were your classic sandwich maker grilled cheese. I love our 3 dollar sandwich maker. Picked it up at one of those garage sales in the parking lot of city park. Anyone can come and sell their junk at the tables. It looked so sketchy at the time and since then it has been used almost as much as the pizza oven. Lovin it. The Mrs. did a great job of her coleslaw and it was a complete meal. All the major food groups, vegetables, fried potatoes, cheese and ketchup. Those are the four main food groups...right?
After the rest of our event filled day (Bank, Post office, library, shopping, visiting friends, swimming) We arrived back home to a wonderful Te-maki spread with a simple yet heart warming bowl of miso soup. My classic blunder of the day was not buying the main thing I was sent out to buy. During the shopping I had taken a can of Tuna off the shelf and put it in the shopping cart. However, it never made it onto the conveyor belt or into the bag because it wasn't on the receipt and it sure isn't in our kitchen. So we were lacking the fish department. However, the rest of it was awesome and I am pretty content. Nothing a cold beer or warm back rub couldn't improve but that is true of pretty much anything.

Impatient Croissants

Well we had a pretty slack day today. But we did try to make croissants. First of all lets do dinner. At about 6:00pm the kids and I decided we were hungry. We had no plan for dinner or any particular ingrediants on hand. As we looked in the fridge there really wasn't anything there. My wife said how about pizza grilled cheese sandwiches. And so it was.The croissants had started around lunch time. We watched a video on how to make croissants. It was very informative but said you should really take two days to make them. We couldn't wait so it all happened today. We started with the dough. It was basic enough. Then you make the butter cake and put it in the fridge. The picture above is the first rolling of the dough wrapped around the butter. Two folds (there were supposed to be three) later we were back in the fridge. We left it in the fridge for about an hour. This was supposed to be over night. Then we took it out, rolled it one more time and cut it into pieces and rolled them up. They were left to rise on the tray for an hour and then brushed with egg wash. Finally they were baked for 15 minutes at 375.
In the final analysis I think we definitely should have gone the extra fold. Next time I would try four folds. Also I might try leaving it in the fridge over night. They were delicious but they weren't as crispy and flaky as I wished. Patience may be the key to croissants. We had fun doing it and we definitely learned some things. I will try to leave the house tomorrow.

We missed it.

Okay we had three salads tonight, a green salad from the garden with a sour cream and dill dressing, the left over chick pea and chard salad from last night and the wife whipped up a tuna salad which was eaten by some in sandwiches and by yours truly on top of the previously mentioned green salad. I was in charge of the grilled cheese and grill them I did. You will notice none of these dishes feature in this evenings meal. My son had worked his way through dinner and was onto a post meal snack of carrots and sour cream dill dip. He was also naked. Really cute until he decides today isn't a toilet day. Newman! Well I guess that is what elbow grease and febreeze are for. So the picture of dinner was not the only thing we missed this evening.

On the plus side we went to the Canada Day festivities here in town, had a lazy afternoon, and then went swimming by the river. We almost got blown away by a crazy sudden windstorm which managed to blow down a tree by the river but everyone made it back safely. We watched two videos, skipped bath time and now everyone is going to bed. Teeth are brushed, everything else can be dealt with tomorrow. If Dora reads this, "Look at what your missing. We love you and the phone message was meant in jest." Night all.

Meal one

So here is the first meal on the first day, and yes it happened to be yesterday. Man people can be so picky. We had grilled cheese sandwiches made in the second hand sandwich maker, miso soup courtesy of the daughter, a basic green salad and left over sushi from the easter egg hunt potluck we attended. Not a bad lunch and more than likely way over what should be expected on a regular basis.

The best part is that this meal was planned in the morning and came together quite nicely.
